The Partner Behind the Mission
Martini is more than a service dog. She's the reason BCFF's founder can sit at a restaurant and actually enjoy dinner with his family. She's why a trip to Disneyland isn't an exercise in hypervigilance. She's the difference between backing into a corner waiting for the worst — and being present in the moment.
She's been trained to do the practical things: retrieve medication, pick up keys and a wallet when they slip from fumbling hands — something that happens daily on bad back days. But the real work she does can't be listed on a task card.
She watches crowds so her handler doesn't have to. She positions herself to cover his back in restaurants. She navigates crowded movie theaters and theme parks with a calm, steady presence that says I've got this. You can let go.

What Martini Does
Orbiting & Space Creation
In heavy crowds, Martini orbits around her handler — creating a physical buffer of space. She watches his back at the ATM, positioning herself as a rear guard so he can focus on the transaction without looking over his shoulder.
Behavior Alerting
Trained to recognize and alert to stress behaviors her handler doesn't even notice — nail picking, leg tapping, and other unconscious signals of rising anxiety. She interrupts the spiral before it takes hold.
Medication Retrieval
Trained to retrieve medication on command — critical on bad pain days when getting up is a challenge. She brings what's needed, when it's needed.
Item Retrieval
Keys, wallet, phone — when hands fumble or a bad back makes bending over impossible, Martini picks it up. Daily mobility support that keeps independence intact.
Off-Duty Presence
Even when she's not working, she's working. The steady presence of a service dog at home changes the entire atmosphere — less tension, more calm, a family that feels like a family again.
The Difference She Made
Before Martini, family life was strained. Restaurants meant sitting with a back to the wall, watching every person who walked in. Movie theaters felt impossible. Theme parks were a non-starter. The hypervigilance that kept a first responder alive on the job was destroying his ability to just be a husband and father.
Martini didn't fix everything overnight. But she gave something back that had been missing for years: the ability to be present. To sit at a table without scanning exits. To walk through a crowd without bracing for impact. To go to Disneyland and actually enjoy it — because someone else had watch duty.
Off duty, she's been a life saver in ways that don't make it onto a task list. She's the reason mornings are easier, evenings are calmer, and the space between shifts doesn't feel so heavy.
This is what a service dog partnership looks like. This is what BCFF's canine scholarship program exists to make possible — for every first responder and veteran who needs it.
